Established in 1956, the Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the oldest Disciplines at BIT Sindri. It grew over the years and set very high standards for educating aspiring Chemical Engineers and Scholars. The department offers a four-year B.Tech degree course and a Postgraduate program for an M.Tech degree with a specialization in Chemical Plant Design in Engineering. The National Board Of Accreditation (NBA) has accredited the B.Tech program for the next two years in 2021. The department features highly qualified and experienced faculties dedicated to teaching and promoting Research and Development in basic and advanced areas. Since its establishment, a well-balanced curriculum of theory and practice and well-equipped laboratories, such as the Unit operations lab, process control lab, Petroleum refinery engineering lab, and Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics lab, have been its defining characteristics. Numerous contemporary instruments have been added to the laboratories to keep up with the rapidly evolving technologies.

The students graduating from the department are well-positioned in their fields in India and Abroad. Additionally, many students pursue higher education in India and foreign lands like Germany, Singapore, the USA, etc. Consequently, the Alumni network of the department is incredibly robust.

FLUIDISATION LAB–

The lab deals with processes involving heat and mass transfer to or from the food material, achieved from fluidization. The college has an enormous no. of equipment such as the ultra sonicator with titanium probe, hot air cyclone separator, and fluidised bed.

CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY LAB–

The technology department produces industrial products from a series of chemical processes. During studies, the student will gain a reliable basic knowledge of general and inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical chemistry. Chemical technologies enrich our quality of life by providing new solutions to problems in health, materials, and energy usage problems.

CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING LAB-

In this laboratory course, students will perform experiments related to chemical reactions, chemical reaction kinetics, and basic operations of a chemical reactor. The aim is to train the students to combine the grip and awareness of reaction chemistry and chemical engineering for design or optimization purposes.

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM LAB –

The lab aims to observe the effects of changes in concentrations of products and reactants on the position of the equilibrium of given chemical reactions.

Instrumentation Lab offers instruments, reagents, diagnostic products, blood gas systems, and more. Our lab contains a pressure control system, vertical drum, test skid, bimetallic hygrometer, hair type, and dead weight pressure gauge.

UNIT OPERATION (HTO/MTO/FPO) LAB -

The lab provides students with many industrially relevant learning opportunities. Chemical engineering students are equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE) to operate a liquid extraction unit. The lab follows proper process safety gear and practices. Students are well-equipped to learn the intricacies of chemical process units. The objective of the Unit Operations Laboratory is to allow students to get hands-on experience in chemical engineering while studying the fundamental principles.

The various equipment that the lab inculcates is a multistage distillation column, cooling tank, boiler oil fired, oil tank, feed tank, bod incubator, heat exchanger control system, single and triple effect evaporator, drill machine, jacketed kettle, composite wall apparatus, small cyclone separator, plate rolling machine, shell, and tube heat exchanger, hydraulic power hacksaw, hand milling machine, vibrating screen, bowl mill, rotary crusher, plate cutter machine, blake jaw crushers, grinder, shaker, globe disintegrator, ball mill, diffusion of liquid in the air, dorr thickener, mixer machine, double motion paddle mixer, plate bed lathe machine, wilfley table.

THERMODYNAMICS/FLUID MECHANICS LAB –

The lab furnishes our Chemical engineering students with the study of "the conversion of energy into work and heat" and its relation to macroscopic variables such as temperature, volume, and pressure. The lab has equipment such as a refrigeration cycle test rig, centrifugal, thermal conductivity of metal rod, waste plastics to fuel oil, single-cylinder two-stroke engine, Calibration of orifice meter, and mechanical heat pump.
