The department was established in 1956. Since then, B.I.T. Sindri has had a rich heritage of producing and shaping world-class metallurgists. The department of Metallurgical Engineering is NBA accredited. The department runs one undergraduate course in Metallurgical Engineering, and 02 postgraduate courses with a specialization on Metallurgical & Materials Engineering and Material Engineering (Nano Technology). The metallurgists of this department are constantly striving to uplift the operative professors, interactive alumni, and enthusiastic students that together comprise the Department of Metallurgy. Over the years, the department has developed excellent expertise in the areas of Extractive Metallurgy, Physical Metallurgy, Mechanical Metallurgy, Mechanical behavior of Materials, Nano-science and Technology, Powder Metallurgy, Environmental Degradation of Materials, etc. In keeping with its tradition of producing world-class metallurgists, the department has actively diversified to adopt today’s teaching and learning tools to address today’s technological challenges in various fields. Program Educational Objectives (PEOs):                    

The following are the PEOs set by the department:

PEO1: The graduate will have in-depth knowledge of Metallurgical aspects such as scientific principles of extraction, phase transformations, mechanical treatment, heat treatment, structure-property correlations, and service behavior of various types of materials necessary to formulate, solve and analyze critical engineering problems.

 

PEO2:  To facilitate our graduate to make his successful career in the metallurgical and manufacturing industry, academics, research, and development that meet the needs of Indian and multinational companies.

 

PEO3: To provide the skill of solving unfamiliar problems through a literature survey, deciding a suitable research methodology, and conducting interdisciplinary/collaborative-multidisciplinary scientific research as per the need.

 

PEO4: To facilitate the art of reflective learning, build hands-on experimental skills, and become familiar with modern engineering software tools and equipment and able to work independently or as a part of a team for successful project implementations in his/her professional life.

 

PEO5: To provide leadership qualities, techno-economic and social considerations, an aptitude for life-long learning, and be introduced to professional ethics and codes. The graduate will develop the ability to communicate technical information in both written and oral form.

The Fuels, Refractories, and Furnaces Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides students the knowledge of practical and hands-on training on the phenomenon of solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels and fundamental ideas about refractories and metallurgical furnaces. This lab has the following equipment Flash point apparatus, Oven Electrically Heated, Gallenkamp bomb calorimeter static, Muffle furnace, Gas calorimeter, etc.

2-Metallurgical Thermodynamics and Kinetics Lab:

Metallurgical Thermodynamics and Kinetics Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides the students with the knowledge of basic principles of thermodynamics and kinetics which is a must for the understanding of any metallurgical processes involving chemical reactions and physical changes at high temperatures. This lab has the following equipment such as pH – meter (G-Type), Conductivity meter, Polari meter, Barometer, Tube furnace, Tilting furnace, etc.

3-Metallurgical Analysis Lab

Metallurgical Analysis Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides the students the knowledge on basic principles of sample preparation and chemical analysis of samples through different techniques. This lab has the following equipment such aa Bunsen burners, High Temp. furnace, Electrical heater, Regulate Hot plate, etc.

4- Mineral Engineering Lab:

5-Metallography Lab

8-Electro hydro & Corrosion Lab

The Corrosion Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides the students the knowledge of practical and hands-on training for testing of corrosion rate of metal and alloys with the following equipments such as crucible and digital weighing machine for corrosion test by weight loss technique, Ammeter D.C. range, Retort stand, Induction furnace, etc.

9-Physics of Materials Lab

The Physics of Materials Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides the students the knowledge of practical and hands-on training in stereographic projection, the angle between the crystallographic plane, and grain size measurement, etc with the following equipment such as Wulf net, Metallurgical Microscope, microstructural image for grain size measurement, etc.

10-Extractive Metallurgy-I Lab

The Extractive Metallurgy-I Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides the students the knowledge of practical and hands-on training for the Roasting of sulfide ores, Calcination of limestone, drying of moist sand, and study of pelletizer with the following equipment such as crucible and digital weighing machine, muffle furnace, disc pelletizer, Induction furnace, etc.

11-Mechanical Testing Lab

15-Nano-science and Technology Lab

The Nano-science and Technology Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides the students the knowledge of practical and hands on training for nanopowder production of different metals and alloys, coating of metals and alloys with the help of following equipment such as Scanning Tunnel Microscope (STM), Physical Quantity Measurement system (PQMS), Low-Speed Diamond Cutter, Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD), etc.

16-Heat Treatment Lab

17-Met Workshop Lab

The Metallurgical Workshop Lab in the department of Metallurgical Engineering at BIT Sindri provides the students the knowledge of practical and hands on training for sample preparation for different mechanical testing like Tensile test, Izod Test, Charpy Test, Torsion Test, hardness Test etc. of different metals and alloys sample.

The Department is equipped with 17 laboratories including a computer lab and has its own departmental library. Internet services are available to all students and faculty.
