Department of Production & Industrial Engineering
The Production & Industrial Engineering Department of BIT Sindri (formerly known as Production Engineering), is the first of its kind in Asia, was started in the year 1955 to offer a multidisciplinary academic program for four years B. Tech. program in Production Engineering. Ensuing, it was changed to the Production & Industrial Engineering Department to comprehend its ambit through which students can get a wide range overview of the real-world industry practices for increasing efficiency and productivity, strides towards solving complex problems, cost-effectiveness, quality control, etc.; along with the manufacturing processes. In its long expedition, the department has successfully secured its strong links with renowned industries of the country, R&D organizations, consultancy organizations, and academic institutes in the region. The faculty members have an unremitting spirit and are actively engaged in research and development activities many of which are funded by external agencies.
The curriculum of Production & Industrial Engineering is an interdisciplinary engineering discipline that includes manufacturing technology, engineering sciences, management science, and optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations. It is a perfect blend of manufacturing processes and production methodology.
As a result, the students are exposed to fundamental subjects from both manufacturing and industrial engineering like engineering materials, casting technology, machining technology, physical and mechanical joining processes, tool design, production planning, metrology, manufacturing automation, rapid prototyping, work-study, ergonomics, operation research, tooling, manufacturing management, materials management, etc. and advanced subject like robotics, additive manufacturing, IoT based manufacturing, entrepreneurship, etc.

Production and Industrial Engineering Society was formulated with the intention to provide guidance to the students towards recent advancements in the fields of industrial management. It regularly organizes technical events including seminars, quizzes, and discussions to educate and engage the participants. These events help to provide in-depth understanding in the field of advanced materials along with modern and hybrid manufacturing technologies and systems in the context of the current industrial requirements. Recently, PIES has organized various webinars on the topic like Industry 4.0, IoT, Additive Manufacturing: Insights into Direct Energy Deposition, Robotics and Automation, Competitive manufacturing, etc. with speakers from academia and industry including organizations like University of Windsor (Canada), University of Sherbrooke (Canada), IITs and NITs.
